The Edward

Posted on 3 July, 201116 October, 2011 by Ikhlas

Since every YA book out right now has the Edward hero, I figured I’d do a post about all the Edwards. Oh come on, you know the guy…don’t you?

Other than the requisite things about Edward from Twilight, the Edward archetype falls into the following pitfalls:

  • He’s hot. Like scorching hot. Like he will melt your eyeballs out of your eye-sockets hot. Okay, maybe not that extreme, but you get the picture.
  • He likes to brood. He’s got a lot on his mind, like ways of keeping you safe from even a chipmunk, so this translates into broodiness.
  • He apparently knows everything. He might have been alive for awhile, so he knows about holy wars between mythical creatures, the way the universe works and even when you’re thinking about him.
  • He’s hot and then he’s cold. One second, he gazes deeply into your orb-like eyes, as if he wants to drown in them. The next second, you could be a fly on the wall.
  • He spies on you. Kind of creepy, but this is apparently his way of making sure you’re safe from everything. Like aforementioned chipmunk.
  • He’s dangerous. You shouldn’t fall in love with him, and he’s warned you. But he falls anyways.
Just in case you still don’t know which YA heroes I’m talking about, let’s take a look at some examples:
1. Edward Cullen: He broods, he’s hot, he spies and he knows everything. ‘Nuff said.
2. Kartik from A Great and Terrible Beauty: Not a fallen angel or one of the living undead, Kartik still knows everything about what Gemma’s supposed to do in the realms, except when he doesn’t.
3. Jace from The Mortal Instruments series: The resident bad-boy, Jace is tormented when he finds out that the love of his life, Clary, is his sister. His escape? Broodiness.
4. Patch from Hush Hush: Patch is so skilled at spying, he makes Nora feel like she’s seeing things and tricks her mind into hallucinations. She still falls in love with him anyway.
5. Daniel from the Fallen series: He loves Luce so much that he sends her off to a school all the way across the country so that she’s safe. Really safe.
So there you have it! The Edward character in a nutshell. Crack open any YA of the paranormal/fantasy variety and you’ll find Edward outside of Twilight.
Thanks for reading,
Ikhlas

Hahaha sooo true! Edward is just one of the many cookie-cutter lover interests in fiction….there’s always the boy next door….the popular guy who the heroine thinks is out of reach….the best friend who is suddenly attractive…ect ect. Yet I continue to read these stories anyways 😛
