Review: The Hunger Games Movie

If you haven’t seen the movie yet, please do not read my review since it will be riddled with spoilers. 🙂

Since I just came home a little while ago from watching The Hunger Games movie, I figured I’d best do a review before I forget all my points.

Hmmm, now where to begin? Let’s split the movie into 2 parts: before the Games and then the Games themselves.

I absolutely loved before the Games. The tone, the setting, the portrayal of District 12, the reaping, all of it. The tone was just perfect; when the Peacekeepers came to take Katniss away, and you could hear Prim screaming hysterically, I actually got tears in my eyes, because the look on her face was heartbreaking. The sense of desperation in District 12 was just so haunting, especially the scene of the reaping.

When I first watched the trailer, I wasn’t feeling Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss whatsoever. She just didn’t seem right for the role. But after watching her in the film? I’ve completely changed my mind!

I’ve actually never seen her in anything else before, but she was perfect as Katniss. She had this unlikeable quality about her, this arrogance and brashness, which was exactly  how Katniss was and immediately convinced me right away that she was perfect for this role. Given the fact that she’s the protagonist, I missed hearing her thoughts, which is something you obviously lose when you move from a book to a movie medium (unless you do voice overs), but the director did these intense close-ups to her face, and showed everything as if it was from her point of view, which made it seem like I still knew what she was thinking. It was amazing. I think she was probably my favourite part of the movie, hands down.

Since I didn’t reread the book before I watched the movie, I had sort of forgotten how much time is spent in the training, before the actual Games. I felt like that part was a bit too long, but it was still done well. I loved the details they spent on the weird costumes of the citizens of the Capitol, and the efforts taken to show us how sick and twisted this whole thing is, seen especially in the loud cheers and jeers of the citizens during life or death situations for the tributes.

In every single trailer that was released, the Games were never actually shown. I figured this was done to maintain the element of surprise, because they were going to blow me away. Unfortunately, they didn’t.

For some reason, I just wasn’t feeling it. In the books, my heart pounds throughout the entire Games, each and every time I read it. There’s this adrenaline rush that you experience, and I wish this could have been experienced more in the film, especially at such crucial moments.

The thing that bugged me the most, though, was the scene with the berries. Katniss has barely suggested to Peeta that they both die, and Peeta has barely agreed, before the gamekeepers are begging them to stop. For such an important scene, a scene that changes everything and becomes the seed for a rebellion, I would have liked it to be much more dramatic. It was over way too quickly for it become such an important moment in the coming months.

Something else that niggled at me was the way we kept being pulled out of the Games. I get that this needed to be done to explain the reason why certain things were being done, but it just took away from the action, and any sense of urgency that we had gained.

The ending itself wasn’t all that climactic in general. Again, I didn’t feel that sense of urgency, that sense of fear, in the pit of my stomach as I watched Katniss look President Snow in the eye and know that she’s far from safe, from from being free.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. It was evident that Suzanne Collins had a role in the writing of the screenplay, since things followed the original order. Jennifer Lawrence was easily my favourite actor, but Liam Hemsowrth and Josh Hutcherson were also really good. I definitely see why Gale was added more throughout the film. There’s two fights at the end that blew me away, and that’s not including the fight with the mutts, who were actually really scary.

With beautiful cinematography, superb acting, and excellent attention to the details, The Hunger Games is a must-see.

4/5.

A Lovely Time

So yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting and catching up with my good friend Chelsey, from Chels and a Book. I hadn’t seen her in ages! And by ages I actually mean ages, and not a last week, like my dad always claims I say.

We went to Humber together last summer for the Creative Book Publishing Program and that’s where we bonded over our mutual love of YA. After graduating from Humber, we didn’t have a lot of opportunities to meet in person (we did go to a Sarah Dessen signing though!), given both our busy schedules and the fact that we live on opposite sides of the GTA (Greater Toronto Area for all my non-GTA friends). But I love reading her blog and using it to find out what’s going on with her.

Chelsey had been telling me that she had some books set aside for me for quite some time and wanted to give them to me, so we set a date and met up. 🙂 It was such a beautiful, warm day yesterday, and despite the fact that I got a tiny bit lost on my way to the subway station, it was so worth the half hour drive to go and see her.

So here’s all the awesome loot she gave me. Since Chelsey is interning at a publishing house right now, she always hears about the coolest books.

The first thing that she handed to me once we sat down, slurping on our respective coffees and Iced Caps, was a People magazine which was full of Hunger Games photos and tidbits! I don’t actually buy or read a lot of magazine (except for when I skim the headlines in tedium while waiting in the grocery store line), so this was a real treat for me. Continue reading →

Review: The Way We Fall

The Way We Fall (Fallen World, #1)It starts with an itch you just can’t shake. Then comes a fever and a tickle in your throat. A few days later, you’ll be blabbing your secrets and chatting with strangers like they’re old friends. Three more, and the paranoid hallucinations kick in.

And then you’re dead.

When sixteen-year-old Kaelyn’s isolated community is hit with an unknown and deadly virus, the government deems it necessary to quarantine the whole island. No one can go in or out. With food rationed off, the members of Kaelyn’s community begin to panic and begin behaving in ways they normally wouldn’t.

Written in a series of journal entries to an old friend, Kaelyn documents the way her small community tries to battle the deadly virus and how people who she thought she knew her whole life suddenly change and become someone else. In The Way We Fall, Megan Crewe demonstrates how frail humans are and how deep our survival instincts go.

Pink

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve had an obsession with all things British. Growing up, I had a British best friend, whose mom was so much cooler because she had a British accent (at least in my opinion).

I grew up reading Harry Potter, and practised my British accent at home and in my head. Things obviously sounded better.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

I devoured Jane Austen novels and used to wish I lived in Victorian England, only until I discovered their hygiene wasn’t the greatest.

I was furious when I discovered that the movie version of Confessions of a Shopaholic wouldn’t take place in England, that Becky Bloomwood would lose her very essence by being removed from London to New York.

Confessions of a Shopaholic (Shopaholic, #1) >

In terms of fashion, I’ve always been appreciative of British clothing and design, especially since everything my friend would bring home with her from her trips to the UK every few summers was beautiful and had me drooling with envy.

So when I found out that British brand Top Shop was opening up a small store in The Bay at Toronto’s Yorkdale mall, I couldn’t believe it. I’ve been drooling over their clothes and accessories for a few years now, but couldn’t afford anything, since they don’t have a Canadian website and so shipping costs an arm and a leg and a few fingers.

I couldn’t get to the shop last year, but today was told that we would be stopping for a minutes at Yorkdale, on a longer trip with my mom and her friend. I immediately made plans to make a stop, no matter how short, to check out their stuff. And oh my, I was salivating the second I stepped off the escalator to the small, enclosed section of the store.

Their stuff was beautiful. Gorgeous, chic fabrics, feminine and frilly patterns and cuts, and really great quality. This stuff was not cheap and the price tags confirmed this.

Here’s some stuff from their website, just to give you an idea. I didn’t see all of this stuff, since their shop in The Bay is a small one, but it was all just so beautiful. I wanted it all.

Sleeveless Lace DressI actually saw this!

LIMITED EDITION Snow Bead Scatter Dress**

Quilted Leather Corner Purse

Ponte Shrunken Blazer

Foil Hieroglyphic Skirt by Unique**

It was all so pretty, but so so expensive. So since I knew I wasn’t going to come back any time soon, and really, we spent all that gas money anyway, I ended up buying a bag 🙂

Pink Snake Insert Holdall

Isn’t it beautifullll?! And yes, its pink. I have a lot of pink, I know, but I just couldn’t resist! Its got faux snakeskin detailing and cream accents and its so unbelievably soft. Besides that, its the perfect size for all my stuff (wallet, agenda, notebook, pen, makeup, a book) without being overly huge and bulky. Its perfect!

Did I need it? Probably not…

But did I want it? Yes!

^_^

Other than that, I’ve been volunteering with an Islamic convention, which is why I haven’t been updating so much lately, except to do book reviews. I’ve also been writing a lot too, which makes me happy. The deadline I set myself is coming up soon, so I really hope I can finish the first draft by then, so that I can get going on revisions.

But I feel like I’ve finally hit my stride now and am excited to see where the story takes me.

I’ve been reading so much over the past few weeks that I haven’t really been getting much writing done. Its hard because I get sucked in really easily and constantly have a book on the go (this is a common problem), so that I get distracted easily. So I’m not quite sure what to do. I know some authors who don’t read while they write, but that would be like not breathing while I write. So I’m thinking to sticking to books I’ve already read; I tend to take things a bit slower with them (sometimes), since I know what happens next. Or maybe switching to Classics for a bit might be beneficial…

Before I sign off, I just wanted to do a shoutout to my cousin Sabila, who has recently informed me that reads every post of mine. So thanks Sabs! I still remember when you used to eat dirt. 😀 Hehehe ^_^ Just kidding, I love you! 🙂

Anyway! I hope you all had a good weekend 🙂
