Recipe: Tie-Dye Cupcakes

So I’m writing this while recovering from a cold, which is never fun. Every time I tweet or write ‘I hate having a cold!’, I keep asking myself, who does like having a cold?! No one, but it still bears repeating.

And while I don’t actually celebrate Christmas, I hate being sick on a holiday since I don’t have work and am allowed to just lounge around and do nothing, since that’s what everyone else is doing. But instead of relaxing by the fireplace, I was stuck on the couch with cans of Ginger ale and tissues and a hacking cough.

My family hosted a party on Christmas, mostly because everyone was off, and I wasn’t allowed anywhere in a 5 foot radius of my darling nephew. Which sucked because everyone was cooing over him, while I sulked in a corner, trying not to infect everyone with my germs. I think it was in everyone’s best interests that I was sent to bed early with a large dose of cold medication…

Like so many things in life, these cupcakes didn’t go as planned. Technically they were supposed to be rainbow cupcakes, but then I got lazy with the food colouring, so they became tie-dye! Lol. ^_^

These are super easy to make and even more fun to decorate and eat! You can use any combination of colours for the cake batter and the frosting, and they can also work well for holidays. Anyway, do try them out and let me know how you get on!

Recipe: Tie-Dye Cupcakes

Cook Time: 18 minutes

Yield: 24 regular cupcakes or 48 mini ones

Ingredients

    Cupcakes
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tbsp vanilla
  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 2 or more food colouring jars
  • Frosting:
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 1/2 cups icing sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 1 tbsp milk (if needed)
  • 2 or more food colouring jars

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Mix flour and baking powder in a small bowl and set aside.
  3. In another bowl, cream your butter and sugar until creamy. Add eggs and vanilla. Fold in half of the dry ingredients, and mix until combined. Add milk, and then fold in rest of the dry ingredients.
  4. Separate batter into separate bowls, depending on how many colours you're using. Drop a few drops of food colouring into your batter and mix well. Scoop out one to two tablespoons of batter into the pre-lined cupcake tins, layering the colours.
  5. Bake 16 to 18 minutes for regular cupcakes and 12 to 14 minutes for mini ones.
  6. Frosting
  7. Beat the butter until smooth. Add in the icing sugar, 1/2 a cup at a time. Mix well after each addition. Add in vanilla. If the frosting is too thick, add in milk.
  8. Again, separate frosting into separate bowls, depending on how many colours you're using. Drop a few drops of colour into each bowl and mix well.
  9. Scoop the batter, one tablespoon at a time, into a piping bag. Squeeze out some of the frosting onto a plate until you notice the tie-dye effect coming through.
  10. Wait until cupcakes are completely cool before frosting them.

I made these for the kids I teach at a Friday night Islamic School, and they loved the tie-dye effect. If you have kids coming over or an event around kid-friendly food, definitely make these! The batter is soft and fluffy, and the frosting creamy and sweet. Also, you can get crazy with the colours and try all sorts of different effects!

Anyway, I hope you guys try these fun cupcakes out. 🙂 Hopefully I’ll be much more coherent in my next post, but hope you’re all having a good week!

Thank you for your comment, Sahar! You are too sweet 🙂 🙂
I separated the frosting into three bowls, then put a few drops of three different food colourings. Then I put them all in one piping bag, bit by bit, and then frosted the cupcakes. The frosting came out swirled and looked like tie-dye. Hope that helps!
      JazakAllah khair again 🙂
